WITH A TREK IN AFGHAN WAKHAN, NOSHAQ BASE CAMP THROUGH THE WAKHAN CORRIDOR TO PAMIR HIGHWAY
Day 1. Khorog - Ishkashim (120km, 3-4 hours of driving including stops)
Meeting with a driver at a hotel/homestay in Khorog. Departing Khorog and driving to Ishkashim Tajik-Afghan border check-post. Cross into Afghanistan. After registering at the local police office and getting Wakhan National Park entrance tickets, exploring the local bazaar. Overnight in a guest-house in Sultan-Ishkashim. 120 km (*2=240km)
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day - 2100 m in Khorog, and at end of the day –3037 m in Sultan Ishkashim.
Day 2-5. Sultan-Ishkashim – Noshaq Peak base camp (4 days trekking)
Drive to Qozideh village in the Afghan Wakhan. 4 days trekking, 35 kms to the base camp (4450 m) of Noshaq Peak (7492 m), Afghanistan’s highest summit and second highest peak in the Hindukush. Highlights: superb close-up views of four 7000 m peaks, Wakhan’s best short trek. 35km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: Tthe highest point of these days would be base camp of Noshaq Peak 4450m.
Day 6. Noshaq Peak, Kozideh – border pass – Langar ( 10-12 hours of driving)
Driving back to Ishkashim to cross the border into Tajikistan. After crossing into Tajikistan driving to the Tajik Wakhan. On the way visiting the ruins of Kah-Kaha and Yamchun fortresses, Bibi-Fotima hot-spring, pre-Islamic shrines, Museum of Sufi Muborak Wakhani. Overnight in a homestay in Hisor/Langar village. 135 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day - 2250 m in Ishkashim, and at end of the day – 2800 m in Hissor.
Day 7. Langar – Jarty-Gumbez ( 8-10 hours of driving)
Departing Wakhan and driving towards the Great Pamir of Tajikistan via Zorkul Nature Reserve and the same name lake. Short hike along the Zorkul (Victoria) lake. In the evening soaking in the Jartygumbez hot spring. Overnight in a guest-house in Jarty-Gumbez. 200 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day - 2800 m in Hissor, and at end of the day –4520m in Jarty-Gumbez.
Day 8. Jarty-Gumbez – Bulunkul (8-10 hours of driving)
Departing Jarty-Gumbez and driving to Bulunkul village (the coldest place in Tajikistan). Short detour to visit the cave with Bronze Age pictographs, Shakhty, watch from the distance Shorbulok Astronomy Observatory (4300 m). In the afternoon fishing Schizopygopsis. Meeting the sunset in Yashilkul (‘Green Lake’) lake. Overnight in a homestay in Bulunkul. 273 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day - 4520m in Jarty-Gumbez, and at end of the day –3737 Bulunkul.
Day 9. Bulunkul – Khorog (10-12 hours of driving)
Heading to Khorog. On the way short stop in Jelondy village to soak in a hot spring and a hike to the ruins of Zoroastrian fire temple in Boghev. In the afternoon Khorog City Tour: Botanical Garden, Historical Museum, City Park and handicraft shops. Overnight in a homestay in Khorog. 210 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day - 3737Bulunkul. and at end of the day –2100m in Khorog.
Day 10. Khorog – Guldara (Zigar preserve) (10-12 hours of driving)
Departing Khorog and head to Dushanbe along the Panj (Oxsus) river. Enjoying the view of the Afghan villages on the other side of the river. Overnight at Ayub/Khudoidod camp in Guldara. 335 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day -2100m in Khorog and at end of the day –1100m Guldara.
Day 11. Guldara – Dushanbe (8-10 hours of driving)
Heading to Dushanbe. On the way discover the mausoleum of a poet and scholar of the 14th century Khoja Mir Sayid Hamadani, Hulbuk fortress, enjoy the view of Nurek Lake Dam. Overnight in a guest-house in Dushanbe. 270 km
Altitudes above sea level during the day: beginning of the day -1295m in Kalai-Khumb the highest pass Shuroabad2126m and at end of the day –780m in Dushanbe.
