DUSHANBE-KHOROG-JAVSHANGOZ-BURUNKUL-MURGHAB-OSH
THROUGH SHOKHDARA VALLEY TO PAMIR HIGHWAY
Day 1. Meeting with a driver at a hotel/guest-house in Dushanbe and heading to the Pamirs via Kulyab. On the way enjoying the view of Nurek Lake Dam and discover Hulbuk fortress in Vose and the mausoleum of a poet and scholar of the 14th century Khoja Mir Sayid Ali Hamadani in Kulyab. Overnight in a home-stay in Kalai Khumb town. 355km.
Day 2. Departing Kalai Khumb (Darvaz) and heading to Khorog. On the way enjoying the Afghan villages along the Panj (Oxsus) River. Short stop in Vomar to see the ruins of fortress (19th century CE). Overnight in a homestay/hotel in Khorog. 250km
Day 3. Morning Khorog City Tour: Botanical Garden, Historical Museum, City Park. Heading to Shokhdara valley (‘Valley of Kings’). 2-3 hours trek to Durumkul lake. Visit Deruj Fortress (2nd-3rd centuries CE). Overnight in a homestay in Jawshangoz. 160 km
Day 4. Day hike towards the base camp of Engels (6507 m) North Face. Overnight in a homestay in Jawshangoz. 0km.
Day 5. Driving to Bulunkul via Maisara pass. Stop near the Turumtaikul alpine lake (4202 m). After lunch in Bulunkul village (the coldest place in Tajikistan), visit local secondary school and talk to head teacher. In the evening drive to Yashilkul (‘Green Lake’) to meet the sunset. Overnight in a homestay in Bulunkul. 110km
Day 6. Departing Bulunkul and driving to Alichur for a half-day yak safari to observe the wildlife (in particular of Marco Polo sheep and Ibex). After lunch depart Alichur and driving to Karakul village via the highest point of the Pamir Highway, Ak Baital pass (4655 m). On the way short stop in Murghab to see the local bazaar and souvenir shops. Next stop near the first Tsarist military post. In the evening hike along the Karakul (‘black’) Lake. Overnight in a homestay in Karakul. 275 km
Day 7. Departing Karakul in the early morning and driving to Osh. Crossing the border into Kyrgyzstan and driving to Sary-Mogol for a day hike towards the Lenin Peak base camp (7134 m). Overnight in a homestay in Sary-Mogol. 185 km
Day 8. Heading to Osh. After lunch Osh City Tour: Sulaiman Too, Osh Bazaar and City Park. Overnight in a hotel in Osh. 265 km.
